Charles Burness was born in Edinburgh on 18 September 1877. Educated at the Edinburgh Academy and employed as a Land Agent. He attested for short service with the 14th Battalion Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders at Edinburgh on 12 July 1915 and was granted a commission in the battalion on 20 January 1916. He entered France on 13 July 1916. Released from the service on 8 February 1919. With copied service papers and m.i.c. French order not confirmed. ‘Pirie’ with copied m.i.c.
