John Chapman was born in Hampshire, England on 9 May 1898. Employed as a Farm Labourer, living in Oakville, Ontario, he attested for the 164th Battalion Canadian Infantry at Oakville on 15 May 1916. He served in France with the 58th Canadian Infantry. Served at home during the Second World War, latterly awarded the Efficiency Medal as a R.Q.M.S. in the 2nd Battalion Lorne Scots.
