Seven: Stoker 1st Class E. C. Foster, Royal Navy, late Royal Fusiliers, killed/died on H.M.S. Calcutta, 1 June 1941

Edward Charles Foster was born in Marylebone, London on 12 March 1899. Served in the Royal Fusiliers and Machine Gun Corps during the Great War. In December 1919 he enlisted into the Royal Navy as a Stoker and served until 1924. Thereafter he served in the R.F.R. Recalled to duty in the Second World War, Stoker 1st Class Foster was killed in action when serving on the anti-aircraft cruiser H.M.S. Calcutta, 1 June 1941. The ship was involved in the evacuation of Crete. She was bombed and sunk on 29 May 1941 with the loss of two officers and 114 ratings. His name is commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial. He was the son of Edward Frank and Alice Foster and husband of Ada Elizabeth Foster, of Willesden, London.
