Three: Ship’s Steward M. W. Butt, Royal Navy, killed in action, serving on H.M.S. Monmouth, at the battle of Coronel, 1 November 1914

Montague William Butt was born in Devonport on 9 May 1883. He entered the Royal Navy from Greenwich Hospital School on 27 July 1898, serving as a Ships’ Steward Boy. Advanced to Ship’s Steward Assistant in May 1901, Acting Ship’s Steward in June 1908 and Ship’s Steward in April 1910. As such he served on the old armoured cruiser H.M.S. Monmouth from July 1914 and was killed in action serving aboard her at the battle of Coronel, 1 November 1914. His name is commemorated on the Plymouth Naval Memorial.
