William Cartwright was born in and enlisted at Huddersfield, Yorkshire. As a Serjeant in the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, he entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 29 July 1915. Serving as Acting Warrant Officer Class 2 in the 11th Battalion, he was killed in action on 15 September 1916, aged 26 years. He was buried in the Adanac Military Cemetery, Miraumont. Company Quartermaster Serjeant Cartwright was the son of Ann Cartwright, of 43 Crosland Street, Crosland Moor, Huddersfield and the late Novello Cartwright. With copied casualty details and m.i.c.
