Harry Mussell was born in the Parish of Downton, near Salisbury, Wiltshire. He attested for the Wiltshire Regiment at Salisbury on 24 April 1900, aged 18 years, 10 months. During the Boer War he served in the 2nd Battalion in South Africa. Transferred to the Army Reserve in 1908. Serving in the 1st Battalion he entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 21 September 1914. Discharged as no longer physically fit for war service on 30 July 1915.
