Three: Captain A. Dodgson, Royal Navy

Egypt and Sudan 1882-89, dated reverse, no clasp (Sub. Lt. A. Dodgson, R.N., H.M.S. Orontes); Jubilee 1897, silver, privately engraved, ‘Commander Arthur Dodgson, H.M.S. Sharpshooter’; Khedive’s Star, 1882, mounted as worn, contact wear and edge nicks, otherwise generally very fine (3) £300-350

Arthur Dodgson was born in July 1859 and, having attended Britannia, was appointed a Midshipman in October 1874. Advanced to Sub. Lieutenant in late 1878, he joined the troopship H.M.S. Orontes in September 1881, and was present in operations off Egypt in the following year (Medal; Khedive’s Star). A spate of further seagoing appointments having followed, he commanded the torpedo gunboat Sharpshooter at the Fleet Review during the Jubilee celebrations of 1897, in which year he was advanced to Commander (Jubilee Medal), but, tragically, having been promoted to Captain, he committed suicide while in command of the Kingston flotilla of torpedo craft - he was found aboard H.M.S. Calliope with his throat cut, a razor by his side; sold with copied service record.
