Henry Montgomery was born on 5 December 1824, the son of Rev. Henry Montgomery, LL.D, Presbyterian Minister of Dunmurry, Belfast. He received a classical and mathematical education at the Belfast Royal Institution and under the private tuition of his father. Nominated as a Cadet for the East India Company’s Bengal Artillery by E.I.C. Director Sir John Hobhouse, at the recommendation of Viscount Acheson. Passed by the Military Committee at East India House, London, on 9 March 1842, he embarked for India on the Samarang on 10 March 1842. Appointed a 2nd Lieutenant on 11 June 1842, he arrived at Calcutta in July 1842 and was posted to the Bengal Foot Artillery in December that year. Promoted to Lieutenant in July 1845, he joined the Army of the Sutlej in January 1846. Appointed Adjutant of the Bengal Foot Artillery at Ludhiana, Punjab, 12 September 1846. Appointed Deputy Commissioner 3rd Class, Saugor & Narbuddah Territories, 25 February 1847, rejoining his unit in the provinces, 2 May 1849. Appointed to temporary charge of the Saugor District, 13 April 1850 and Deputy Commissioner 2nd Class, Saugor & Narbuddah Territories, 25 June 1852. Appointed Deputy Commissioner 1st Class, Saugor & Narbuddah Territories, 29 April 1853 and appointed to the permanent charge of Saugor on 8 December 1853. He died at Saugor on 9 September 1856.
