Frederick Saltmarsh was born in Staindrop and enlisted at Darlington. He entered the France/Flanders theatre of war with the D.L.I. on 25 August 1915. Serving in the 13th Battalion Durham Light Infantry he earned the M.M. for his bravery in the field. He was wounded on 4 August 1916. A a Company Serjeant-Major of the 13th Battalion, he died of wounds on 18 October 1918, aged 26 years. He was buried in the Doingt Communal Cemetery Extension, Peronne, Somme, France. He was the son of Frederick and Elizabeth Saltmarsh, of Staindrop, Darlington and husband of Gertrude Sams (formerly Saltmarsh), of 2 Vane Terrace, Cockfield, Co. Durham.
