James Bendon was born in Frome, c.1860. Enlisted into the 36th Brigade at Frome in September 1878 and was posted to the 25th Brigade at Brecon during the following month. Served with the 13th L.I. in South Africa, July 1879-July 1881. Transferred to the 1st Class Army Reserve at Enniskillen in September 1884.
