Military General Service 1793-1814, 1 clasp, Sahagun & Benevente (T. B. Davis, Asst. Sgn. 7th Hussars) fitted with silver ribbon buckle, extremely fine £1200-1400

One of only three clasps to surgeons, this being the only single clasp. Another medal to this recipient but named ‘7th Lt. Drags.’ was sold by Spink in April 2006.

Thomas Boys Davis was born at Piddletrenthide, Dorset, on 6 January 1783. He served as an Assistant Surgeon in the Derbyshire Militia in 1807 and then as an Assistant Surgeon in the 7th Light Dragoons (Hussars) from 22 September 1808 to 16 August 1810. He served in the Peninsula with the 7th Light Dragoons from November 1808 to January 1809, and received the medal for Sahagun & Benevente (Challis’ roll gives Benevente only). In 1841 he was living at Cerne Abbas, Dorset, and was described as a Surgeon. He died at Cerne Abbas on 2 June 1862, aged 79.

Provenance: Whitton and Laing of Exeter, August 2014, sold by order of the family. Previously reported as stolen, in error.
