Colonel Davis enlisted in May 1939 and was commissioned in January 1941 and attained the rank of Colonel in 1952. He retired in January 1969 and died in August 1980. On 8 December 1941, he was stationed in the Philippines with the 93rd Bomb Squadron. Evacuating to Australia, the 93rd operated from Port Darwin. On 27 June 1942, after his aircraft was damaged by fighters, it crashed about 20 miles from Port Darwin and Davis was thrown clear, suffering only minor injuries. He returned to the burning aircraft several times to pull out injured and dead crewmen, receiving the Soldiers Medal for his actions. His story of this incident is included in the National Geographic Magazine (not with lot),which included a photograph of Davis recovering in the hospital. Davis received his first Air Medal for flights through May 1942. His records show his Silver Star was awarded in 15th Air Force General Orders 220, although the citation is not in his records. He flew with the 32nd Bomb Squadron, 301st Bomb Group, with 15th Air Force. His first Purple Heart would have been awarded for the action in which he earned the Soldier's Medal; his second award was for wounds received in July 1942 and the third was awarded for wounds received over Hungary on 27 June 1944.
