Memorial Plaque 1914-18 (Eustace Hammick) contained in a fine leather case for display, extremely fine £80-120

Eustace Hammick was born in Torquay, Devon on 19 November 1888, the second son of Stephen and Constance Hammick and the grandson of the 3rd Baronet Hammick. Commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the South Lancashire Regiment, he subsequently attained the rank of Captain in the Indian Army.

As Captain in the 17th (The Loyal) Regiment I.A., he was awarded the Military Cross (London Gazette 4 October 1919) for his services at the Battle of Megiddo.

‘He commanded the ‘advance guard’ of the covering force on the night of the 18/19th September 1918, across Wadi Samieh and led his Company in a charge against the enemy’s position on Wye Hill, near El Mugheir. By his fine leadership and skill the operation was a complete success. On 20th September he led his Company to the attack on Kh. Jibeit and although severely wounded during the charge, he remained with his Company until he was too weak to carry on. He set a magnificent example to his regiment.’

Additionally mentioned in despatches (London Gazette 8 August 1918) and awarded the Belgian Order of the Crown, 5th Class (London Gazette 29 November 1918).

After he was wounded he was evacuated by ship to Cairo, where he died on 8 October 1918. He was buried in the Cairo War Memorial Cemetery. With copied research.
