Royal Navy L.S. & G.C., Anchor obverse, ‘Rd. Sparling, Serjeant, Royal Marines, H.M.S. Vestal, 22 Years’, pierced with rings for ring suspension, edge bruising and polished, thus fine £800-1000

Richard Sparling, who was born in Marlborough, Wiltshire, enlisted in the Chatham Division of the Royal Marines in April 1820, aged 18 years. His subsequent seagoing appointments comprised Dover (1821-22), Diamond (1824-26), Spartiate (1827-28), Prince Regent (1831-32), Talavera (1832-33), Ocean (1833-34), and Vestal (1837-42), aboard which latter ship he was awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal. Meanwhile, he had been advanced to Corporal in August 1834 and to Sergeant in December 1839; sold with copied attestation and discharge papers.
