Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 2 clasps, Talana, Defence of Ladysmith (4747 Dr. R. Gill, Rl. Irish Fus.) with replacement ‘hook and ring’ suspension linking the medal and suspension bar, very fine £240-280

Robert Gill was born in Edinburgh. A Labourer by occupation, he attested for the Royal Irish Fusiliers at Glasgow on 5 December 1893, aged 19 years, 9 months. With the 2nd Battalion he was ranked as a Drummer from September 1896 and as a Private from December 1900. With the battalion he served in the East Indies, January 1895-December 1897; Egypt, December 1897-September 1899, and (with the 1st & 2nd Battalions) in South Africa, September 1899-May 1900. Drummer Gill was slightly wounded (gunshot wound to his left leg) at Ladysmith on 2 December 1899. As a result of his wound he was found to be unfit for further service and discharged on 12 July 1901. With copied service papers and roll extract - this confirming the two clasps.
