Hewitt enlisted with ‘D’ Squadron, Colonial Scouts and earned the clasps, Relief of Ladysmith and Natal. Discharged 26 March 1900. Enlisted into the Natal Carbineers (Richmond Troops 28 March 1900 and earned clasps Laing’s Nek and Transvaal. Taken prisoner at De Jager’s Drift, Buffalo River, 30 July 1900. Discharged 9 October 1900. Re-enlisted on 19 November 1901 as Trooper in No. 2 Squadron, N.V.C.R.; discharged on 31 July 1902. (Ref. Vendor’s notes).
