William Edward Hewitt was born in Barnstaple, Devon on 17 November 1900, the son of Chief Petty Officer William Hewitt (1862-1942). He enlisted into the Royal Navy in 1919. Awarded the L.S. & G.C. (ref. ADM 171/143), issued on 11 October 1935; awarded the rare Sick Berth Petty Officer’s Efficiency Medal (ref. ADM 171/61) on 1 January 1936. Latterly living at 9 St. Barnabus Terrace, Stoke, Plymouth, he died at the Royal Naval Hospital, Plymouth on 11 January 1961.
The Sick Berth Petty Officers’ Efficiency Medal was issued annually in gold during the period 1920-40; in bronze during 1941-52 and from 1953 onwards in silver-gilt.
