McPhail joined the Royal Air Force from July 1943 until June 1949, but saw no active service in terms of aircrew duties - his final wartime appointment was in No. 550 Squadron, a Lancaster unit, based at North Killingholme.

Sold with the recipient’s original R.A.F. (Form 1767 type) Flying Log Book for Navigators, Air Bombers, Air Gunners and Flight Engineers, covering the period January 1944 until October 1945, together with his training notes and several wartime photographs, which indicate service in Italy.
