Bradfield was mentioned in despatches (New Year’s Honours) whilst serving as a Chief Mechanician aboard the light aircraft carrier / aircraft repair ship H.M.S. Unicorn. In September 1943 the ship had helped provide air cover for the Salerno Landings in Sicily. At the end of the year she was transferred to the Eastern Fleet in the Indian Ocean and later served with the British Pacific Fleet. He had earlier been awarded the L.S. & G.C. when serving on the aircraft carrier H.M.S. Furious.
