Evelyn A’Court Bergne was born on 13 February 1882, the son of Sir John Bergne, K.C.B., K.C.M.G., of the Foreign Office. He was educated at Repton School, 1896-98. He joined the Inns of Court Regiment on 9 February 1900, was advanced to Sergeant in June 1906. Commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in “A” Company on 18 December 1909 and promoted to Lieutenant in October 1911 and Captain in August 1914. Bergne commanded “A” (No. 1) Company, August 1914-February 1916; No. 6 Company, February 1916-June 1916, and “A” Company, June 1916-January 1918. He was seconded to the Royal Engineers on 21 April 1918 and was appointed to the Marine Company, Inland Waterways and Docks R.E. as senior discipline officer and Assistant Adjutant, 22 April 1918-January 1919. After the war he was employed at the War Office (M.R.3) in charge of the statistical department, January-November 1919. Awarded the Territorial Decoration on 14 January 1920. In civilian life he was a Stockbroker at 36 New Broad Street, London, E.C. Latterly living at 8 Parkside Avenue, Wimbledon, he died on 11 March 1952, leaving an estate of £41,447.
