Three: Lieutenant H. N. Davis, Royal Engineers, who died of wounds, France/Flanders, on 22 February 1915

Herbert Nathaniel Davis was born c.1892, the son of Jewish parents, Edward and Isabella Davis; his father was employed as a Produce Broker. Prior to the war Herbert had gained a B.A. at Emmanuel College, Cambridge and he had served as a Sergeant in the Engineering Section of the Cambridge University Officers’ Training Corps. As a Lieutenant in the 3rd (London) Field Company, Royal Engineers, he was wounded on 21 February 1915 and died of his wounds on 22 February 1915, aged 23 years. He was buried in the Ypres Town Cemetery Extension. Probate on his effects valued at £3,153.8.4 was granted to his father, at the address below, on 22 April 1915. Application was made for his medals in 1921 by R. R. Davis, of Old Grove House, The Grove, Hampstead, London N.W.3. His name is recorded in British Jewry Book of Honour, by Rev. Michael Adler.

Tug of War Cup 1913, silver and gold, hallmarks for Birmingham 1913, in case of issue; Prize Medal, obverse inscribed, ‘2nd L.D.R.E. Company Bayonet Comptn.’, reverse inscribed, ‘1914 Won by 3rd Field Co. Team Lt. Davis’, silver, in C. Usher, Leicester case of issue; Rosary Cup Medal, reverse inscribed, ‘Winners Season 1915-16 R.E. Pres.’, silver, gold and enamel, hallmarks for Birmingham 1911, in Bowman, London case of issue; Cambridge Union O.T.C. cap badge; R.E. cap badge; and a ‘red on khaki’ cloth ‘Star of David’ patch. With copied m.i.c. and other research.
