Walter James Garner was born in Bow, London, on 6 October 1882. He joined the London Fire Brigade in June 1909 when on Army Reserve and received the Coronation Medal in 1911. Recalled to the Colours in August 1914, as a Private in the 11th Hussars he entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 7 October 1914. In July 1917 he left the Army, when, because of the Zeppelin raids over London, former firemen were recalled and re-joined the Fire Brigade. For the remainder of the War he was based at Fulham and Hampstead. Awarded the L.C.C. Good Service Medal on 30 June 1927. Whilst still serving with the Fire Brigade, he died in Hampstead General Hospital on 29 January 1929. With copied m.i.c. and L.C.C. Fire Brigade service paper.
