George Ernest Gatling was born in Camberwell, London in 1893. A Clerk by occupation, he enlisted into the A.S.C. As a Corporal he entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 18 October 1914 and served there with them until May 1918. Attaining the rank of Staff Serjeant-Major, his services earned him the M.S.M. and the French Medaille Militaire. In May 1918 he transferred to the Royal Air Force and as a Flight Cadet, trained as a Pilot. He was transferred to the R.A.F. Reserve on 26 March 1919.

With original parchment award document for the Medaille Militaire showing that Sergeant-Major G. E. Gatling, Adjutant General’s Office G.H.2 (Army Service Corps) was awarded the Medaille Militaire by decree of 8 October 1918. Also with copied m.i.c., gazette extracts and R.A.F. service papers.
