Robert Anderson Telford was born in Athy, Co. Kildare. An Engineer by occupation and a member of the Yorkshire Dragoons, he attested for short service with the Imperial Yeomanry in South Africa at Wakefield on 2 January 1900, aged 23 years. Serving with the 11th Company, 3rd Battalion Imperial Yeomanry (Yorkshire Dragoons), 24 January 1901-23 April 1901. He was discharged at his own request at Shorncliffe on 23 May 1901.
