Pair: Private J. Byrne, Gordon Highlanders

James Byrne was born in Dundrum, County Dublin. A Labourer by occupation and a former member of the City of Dublin Militia, he attested for General Service at Dublin on 22 September 1879, aged 20 years, 6 months. Posted to the 75th Regiment (later Gordon Highlanders), he served overseas in Malta, March 1881-August 1882; Egypt, August 1882-February 1884; Eastern Soudan, February-March 1884; Egypt, April-November 1884; Upper Egypt, November 1884-June 1885; Egypt, July-September 1885; Malta, September-October 1885. Byrne transferred to the Army Reserve in October 1885. He was discharged on 21 September 1891 but the next day re-enlisted for a further 4 years in the reserves. With copied service papers.
