(Civil) Officer’s 1st type breast badge, silver-gilt, hallmarks for London 1917; Kaisar-i-Hind, E.VII.R. issue, silver, complete with top bar; Order of St. John of Jerusalem, Serving Brother’s breast badge, silver and enamel, unnamed; Africa General Service 1902-56, 1 clasp, Somaliland 1902-04 (Capt., 15th Lancers); Delhi Durbar 1911, silver, unnamed, medals mounted court style for wear, good very fine and better (6) £1400-1800

Edward Charles Bayley was born in Edinburgh on 13 December 1867. He was educated privately and at Sandhurst. He was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the 2nd Battalion Scottish Rifles in September 1887, transferring to the Indian Army in 1890. Promoted to Captain in September 1898, Major in September 1905 and Lieutenant-Colonel in September 1913. Was Private Secretary to the Lieutenant-Governor of North West Provinces and Oudh, 1899-1901 and was Private Secretary to the Lieutenant-Governor of Punjab, 1907-20. With the 15th Lancers (Cureton’s Mooltanee Cavalry) he served with the Somaliland Field Force, 1903-04, being attached to the 3rd Ekka Train, Supply and Transport Corps. His medal is possibly unique to regiment. He retired in October 1920. Awarded the Kaisar-i-Hind in 1910, C.I.E. in 1911 and O.B.E. in 1919. Lieutenant-Colonel Bayley died on 26 April 1924.
