India General Service 1895-1902, 2 clasps, Punjab Frontier 1897-98, Tirah 1897-98 (3514 Sergt. J. Barnes, 2d Bn. York. Regt.) good very fine £160-200

John Barnes was born in Chichester on 9 August 1870, the son of John and Sarah Jane Barnes. He attested for service with the Yorkshire Regiment at Brighton on 7 December 1891. With the 2nd Battalion he served in India, being awarded the above medal and clasps. He was promoted to Corporal in November 1892 and to Sergeant in August 1896. Sergeant Barnes was discharged on 5 December 1907 having been found medically unfit for further service. A note with the lot states he fractured his patella in Cape Colony in 1907. He was in possession of two Good Conduct Badges. A note with the lot states he died in 1940.
