Charles Kemp was born in Upper Yeldham, Halstead, Essex. A Labourer by occupation, he attested for the 21st Regiment at Halstead on 8 May 1839, aged 20 years. He volunteered for the 24th Regiment in November 1847. Serving over 20 years in the East Indies, he served in the Second Sikh War and was wounded in the right knee at the battle of Chilianwala, 13 January 1849. Kemp was discharged to a Pension at Chatham on 5 October 1860, his intended place of residence stated to be Great Halstead, Essex. With copied discharge papers and roll extracts.
