John Hallowes entered the Navy in July 1803 and was taken prisoner in July 1805. Confined at Verdun he eventually gained his liberty in December 1810 and afterwards saw much service in gun boats in the Elbe, including the attack on the batteries at Cuxhaven in November 1813, and at the siege of Gluckstadt in January 1814. For these latter services he gained promotion to Lieutenant, by commission dated 22 January 1814. He received promotion to Commander in January 1837 and to Captain in December 1842.
