Bertram Ripley was born in Sheffield, Yorkshire, in March 1892, and enlisted in the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force at Edmonton, in January 1915. Embarked for England, he went out to France as a member of the 4th Battalion, Canadian Infantry (Central Ontario Regiment), and was taken P.O.W. on 8 October 1916. Guests of the Kaiser - Prisoners-of-War of the Canadian Expeditionary Force 1915-18, by Edward H. Wigney states that Ripley was interned in Switzerland on 12 December 1917 and released on 25 March 1918, dates that suggest he made a successful bid for freedom. Ripley died in Victoria, B.C., in February 1969.; sold with brief research.

Alexander Ruckle Brown was born at Mount Forest, Ontario, in February 1888, and enlisted in the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force in October 1915. Embarked for England at the year’s end, he joined the 4th Battalion, Canadian Infantry (Central Ontario Regiment), out in France in May 1916, and died of wounds a few weeks later. Official records state:

‘While the Battalion was moving back from the front line on the night of 25 June 1916, this soldier was wounded by an enemy bullet in the back, quite close to the spine, which resulted in paralysis of the limb. Private Brown was given prompt attention and taken to a Field Ambulance, but succumbed to his wounds the following day at No. 3 Canadian Casualty Clearing Station.’

The son of James and Mary Brown of Mount Forest, Ontario, he is buried in Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Poperinge, Belgium; sold with copied attestation and service papers, and portrait photograph.

Alfred Thomas Crapper was born in Northampton, England, in September 1885, and enlisted in the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force at Hamilton, Ontario, in July 1915. Embarked for England, he went out to France as a member of the 4th Battalion, Canadian Infantry (Central Ontario Regiment), in July 1916 and was killed in action on Vimy Ridge on 9 April 1917. He is is buried in Bois Carre Military Cemetery, France; sold with copied service record and battalion report for April 1917.

George Brown Kennedy was born in Ayrshire, Scotland, in May 1886, and enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force at Kenora, Ontario, in August 1916. Embarked for England, he was employed in the Canadian Forestry Corps prior to going out to France as a member of the 4th Battalion, Canadian Infantry (Central Ontario Regiment), in October 1918. He was demobilised in Toronto in May 1919; sold with copied service record.

Lorne Wesley Shaw was born at Alton, Ontario, in January 1891, and was drafted to the 1st Central Ontario Regiment in October 1917. He died in June 1958; sold with brief research.
