George Lawrence Lacy Mayo was born in Dorset on 20 January 1877, the son of George Mayo and Jane Alice Mayo, and was baptized at All Saints Church at Piddletrenthide, Dorset on 7 February 1877. He received his first commission on 26 May 1900. Lieutenant Mayo served in the 28th Mountain Battery R.A. on the N.W. Frontier during 1908 but soon after was transferred to the Supply and Transport Corps. As a Captain in the same unit he entered the Egypt theatre of war on 19 November 1914 and later attained the rank of Major. For his wartime service he was awarded the 1914-15 Star trio of medals.
