Gilden Joseph Manton, a Farmer from Thornybush, Thornville, enlisted on 29 November 1899, aged 19 years. Served as Trooper 172 in the Colonial Scouts. Discharged (reasons unknown) 16 December 1899. With copied notes and roll extract - the latter lists him as ‘Maunton’, shows entitlement to the clasps, ‘Relief of Ladysmith’ and ‘Natal’, and bears the comment, ‘Condr. A.S.C. (not traced)’.
