Prior to the Great War Charles Edward Shaw served in the Royal Engineers for 16 years and saw service in the Boer War. A Telegraphist in civilian life, he re-enlisted into the Royal Engineers - Army Reserve (Special Reserve) at Chatham on 22 September 1914, aged 44 years, 11 months. He served with the B.E.F., 7-9 July 1915 and 18 November 1915-19 September 1917. He was discharged as being no longer physically fit for war service on 1 March 1918 and awarded the Silver War Badge. With copied Q.S.A. roll extract, m.i.c. and W.W.1 service papers.
