Eber Dyer was born in Curbridge, Oxfordshire. A Labourer by occupation, he attested for the Royal Artillery at Birmingham on 10 October 1898, aged 21 years. With the 84th Battery R.F.A. he served in South Africa, January 1900-November 1906. In addition to the Queen’s medal he was awarded the King’s medal with two clasps. Transferred to the Army Reserve in November 1906, he was discharged having completed his service on 9 October 1910. With copied service papers and roll extracts.

Two guns of this battery were with Colonel Benson when he met with disaster at the battle of Baakenlaagte, 30 October 1901. The section lost 7 killed and 20 wounded.
