James Crisp was born in Ealing Dean, London. A Fishmonger by occupation, he attested for the Royal Artillery at London on 3 August 1897, aged 18 years, 4 months. He served in South Africa with the 75th Battery R.F.A., September 1899-November 1901 and then served in India, November 1901-March 1905. Transferred to the Army Reserve in March 1905, he was discharged in August 1913. With copied service papers and roll extracts.
