James McCormack was born in Navan, Co. Meath. A Labourer by occupation, he attested for the Royal Artillery at Dublin on 12 October 1894, aged 19 years. Served in South Africa with the 74th Battery R.F.A., November 1899-January 1901, being invalided to England. Discharged as medically unfit on 9 April 1901.

David Orr was born in Co. Tyrone. Employed as a Blacksmith and a member of the Londonderry Artillery, he attested for the Royal Artillery at Londonderry on 30 July 1890, aged 23 years, 6 months. After service in India, November 1891-December 1897, he was transferred to the Army Reserve. Recalled to Army Service in October 1899 he served with the 74th Battery in South Africa, November 1899-September 1902. He was discharged having completed his service in September 1902. Additionally awarded the King’s medal with two clasps. Both with copied service papers and roll extracts.
