John Fairman was born in Lee, Kent. He enlisted into the Royal Horse Artillery in November 1897 and served with the corps in South Africa, December 1899-August 1904. He re-enlisted into the R.H.A. on 6 October 1914 and served in the Mediterranean theatre of war, May 1915-March 1916 and then in France, March-October 1916 and July 1917-April 1919. Wounded by gunshot to the right arm, 24 October 1916. Transferred to the Reserve on 20 May 1919. With copied service papers, roll extracts and m.i.c.
