Alastair Robert McLean Moffat was born in Kilwinning, Ayrshire on 31 May 1960. He volunteered for the Royal Navy on 24 August 1976 and entered the service on 31 May 1978, being rated as a Junior Engineer Mechanic. Promoted to Engineer Mechanic 2nd Class in November 1977 when at Osprey and Engineer Mechanic 1st Class in November 1978 when at Heron. Was rated an Air Engineer Mechanic with 846 Squadron (Heron). Served on the aircraft carrier Ark Royal, June 1985-January 1988 and July 1990-December 1991, being advanced to Acting Leading Air Engineer Mechanic in March 1991, on which ship he saw service in the Gulf War. Moffat was confirmed in his rank in March 1992 when at Seahawk. Awarded the L.S. & G.C. on 30 November 1992. Made redundant in November 1994.

With original Royal Navy Certificate of Service and two History Sheets for Air Engineering Ratings - the papers held in a plastic folder.
