Williams served in 161 Battery Royal New Zealand Artillery. The unit was awarded the U.S.A. Meritorious Unit Citation in 1965 when serving with the United States 173rd Airborne Brigade. It later served as part of the 1st Australian Task Force. 161 Battery was additionally awarded the South Vietnam Unit Citation in 1977.
