William Charles Nichols was born in Rockhampton, Queensland. An Architect by profession and a member of the Brisbane Cadet, he attested for the A.I.F. at Brisbane on 13 November 1915, being posted to the Field Company Engineers. Embarked on the Vestalia at Sydney on 11 July 1916 and disembarked at Plymouth on 9 September 1916 and entered France on 13 February 1917. Returned to Australia in December 1919. Served in the part-time army between the wars. Employed as an Architect and living at 88 Davis Street, Rockhampton, he volunteered for service at Rockhampton on 14 October 1939, then aged 46 years, 9 months. Served with the Garrison Battalion at Rockhampton. Notes with the lot suggest he was reduced to Lieutenant after being found guilty of striking a private soldier and was discharged after a heart attack in May 1944. Nichols died on 31 October 1958. With copied service papers and other research.
