Ernest James Chandler was born Phiathan (?), Victoria. A Plasterer by occupation, he attested for the A.I.F. on 27 January 1915, aged 30 years, 1 month. Entered the France/Flanders theatre of war with the 11th Light Horse Regiment. Returned to Australia in July 1915 as medically unfit. Enlisted once more into the 57th Battalion and embarked on 7 March 1916. Later served in the 5th Divisional Salvage Company. He accidentally fractured his ankle on 4 February 1917 and was invalided to England. He was discharged from the Army on 28 October 1918. With copied service papers.
