Patrick Burns was born in Shankhill, Belfast, Co. Antrim. A Shoemaker by occupation, he attested for the Army Service Corps at Belfast on 6 June 1879, aged 23 years. He served overseas in Egypt, August 1882-March 1883 and February-August 1885, and in South Africa, October 1899-June 1901. Serving as a Collar Maker in the A.S.C., he attained the rank of Staff Sergeant in October 1899. He married Susan Brown at Aldershot on 22 May 1890. Discharged, having completed his period of service, at Aldershot on 5 June 1903. With copied service papers.
