James Hendley was born at Christchurch, Co. Cork and enlisted in the 60th Rifles in April 1867, aged 18 years. Embarked for India in September of the latter year, he was present in operations in the Second Afghan War, including Ahmed Khel and Kandahar (Medal & 2 clasp; Star), and was advanced to Lance-Corporal in July 1881 while actively employed in operations in the Transvaal in South Africa. Returning to the U.K. in the following year, he received rapid promotion and was appointed a Colour-Sergeant on transferring to the 3rd Battalion, Royal Irish Rifles in January 1883. Having then served latterly as Quarter-Master Sergeant, he was discharged in July 1897; sold with copied service papers and muster details.
