John Ranshaw/Renshaw was born in Manchester and attested there for the 84th Foot on 3 September 1808, aged 14 years. He was discharged at his own request for pension on 2 September 1835, aged 41. He ‘served with the army in Walcheren in 1809; in the Peninsula under Field Marshal Duke of Wellington in the years 1813 & 1814; New South Wales from the year 1817 to 1819. Present at the battles of the Nive & Nivelle in 1813’. His period of service is given as 23 years 2 months, but adding back his 4 years’ underage service brings the total to 27 years, which figure he chose to record on the reverse of his L.S. & G.C. medal. He afterwards resided at Chowton Green, Manchester, and died on 20 March 1866.
