British Empire Medal, (Military) G.VI.R., 1st issue (Cpl. Robert Buck, H.G.); 1914-15 Star (7498 Pte. R. Buck, Suff. R.); British War and Victory Medals (1798 Pte. R. Buck, Suff. R.), edge bruising, contact marks, and polished, good fine or better (5) £250-300

B.E.M. London Gazette 15 December 1944:

‘In recognition of meritorious service in the Home Guard.’

The original recommendation states:

‘Corporal Buck joined the L.D.V. on its formation in 1940. Although an elderly man, being 65 years of age, this N.C.O. has rarely missed a parade, although having to cycle eight miles each time he attended. His keenness, enthusiasm and devotion to duty under all circumstances has been an example and inspiration to all members of his platoon.’

Robert Buck enlisted in the Suffolk Regiment in January 1907 and was serving in the 1st Battalion on the outbreak of hostilities in August 1914. Subsequently embarked for France in January 1915, he was seriously wounded, being discharged in June 1916 and awarded the Silver War Badge. An early entrant in the Land Defence Volunteers, his B.E.M. was awarded in respect of the above cited deeds in the 3rd (Isle of Ely) Battalion, Home Guard.
