A Great War M.C. group of six awarded to Captain S. Brocklehurst, King’s Own Scottish Borderers

Bord.); 1914 Star, with clasp (5261 Q.M. Sjt., K.O. Sco. Bord.); British War and Victory Medals (Q.M. & Capt.); Army L.s. & G.C., G.V.R., 1st issue (5261 C. Sjt., K.O.S.B.) mounted as worn, good very fine (6) £1200-1500

Recommendation: ‘For conspicuous devotion to duty since the commencement of the war. During the period he has carried out his duties (frequently under the most adverse conditions) in a most efficient manner, and has never failed to justify the reliance placed in him.’

Samuel Brocklehurst was born on 24 April 1874. He enlisted in May 1895 and joined the 2nd Battalion K.O.S.B. at Rawalpindi later that year. Promoted Corporal in 1898, Lance-Serjeant in 1901 and Serjeant in 1902. Appointed Quartermaster Serjeant in 1913 and awarded the Army L.S. & G.C. that same year. He landed in France with the battalion as part of the B.E.F. on 15 August 1914. Brocklehurst was appointed Quartermaster with the honorary rank of Lieutenant on 19 September 1914. He attained the honorary rank of Captain on 19 September 1917.

During the Great War he served in France/Flanders, 13 August 1914-2 December 1914, 18 February 1915-10 December 1917 and 4-19 April 1918; and in Italy, 11 December 1917-3 April 1918. Awarded the M.C. for his conspicuous services during the war. Captain Brocklehurst died in the Sheffield Royal Hospital on 31 March 1926, aged 51 years - he had been invalided home from his regiment stationed at Cairo suffering from malaria.
