George Nell originally went out to South Africa as a member of 14th Battery, R.F.A., in which capacity he was present in the famous V.C. action at Colenso on 15 December 1899.

Born at Monk-Bretton, Barnsley, Yorkshire, he enlisted in the Royal Artillery in March 1889, but was transferred to the Army Reserve just two years later. Rejoining the Colours as a Driver in July 1898, he was posted to 14th Battery, and embarked for South Africa in October 1899. Having then been present at Colenso, he transferred to 66th Battary, R.F.A., and was discharged in March 1902; sold with copied service record.
