William Mathie was born at Govan, Glasgow, and was a Tinsmith when he attested for the Royal Highlanders Glasgow 21 August 1894. He served with the 1st Battalion in South Africa from December 1901 to October 1902, and in France from 28 December 1914. He was invalided home for 3 months in 1917, having contracted pneumonia, and returned to France on 1 August 1917. He transferred to the Tank Corps as a Lance-Corporal on 25 January 1918, and was discharged on 10 February 1919. Sold with copied discharge papers.
