Edward Percy Hicks was born at Barrackpore, India, on 16 March 1843, son of Lieutenant-General G. M. Hicks, C.B., Bengal Army. He was commissioned as an Ensign in the 42nd Foot on 24 May 1861, becoming Lieutenant in September 1865, and Captain in September 1874. He transferred to the 100th Foot (Royal Canadians) in 1876 and retired in 1880. Captain Hicks landed on the Gold Coast with the 42nd Highlanders in January 1874, and was left with a detachment at Yancoomassie Fanti (Medal). Captain Hicks died at St Helier, Jersey, on 26 August 1884.
