John Hawkes was born in the Parish of Longcot, near Farrington, Berkshire, and attested for the 73rd Foot at Reading on 11 December 1844, aged 17 years 10 months. He served eight months in South America, and 9 years 7 months in the Cape of Good Hope, serving throughout the second and third Kaffir wars. He was promoted to Corporal on 18 October 1854, and discharged ‘unfit for further service’ on 4 November 1856, in consequence of ‘ruptured and enlarged testicles’ from arduous service in the Kaffir wars.
